Hooked on Books Interview with Evanka Osmak

Check out Evanka’s answers to our questions below! Her insights into the creative process and the importance of her book's themes are sure to inspire both parents and children alike, as well as the dedicated teachers who encourage a love for reading.

Your educational and career paths have been quite diverse, spanning from civil engineering at Queen’s University to radio and television broadcasting at Seneca College, followed by roles as a news anchor and now a sports anchor. What inspired you to also venture into children’s book authorship?

I believe so strongly in young girls playing sports, individual or team. There seemed to be a void on the book shelves on this topic so I thought why not write about it. But I didn't just want to write about the main character making the team and being the star player. I wanted to be realistic and also remind kids that even if you're not the best player you can still be part of a team. Often kids and teens, especially girls get discouraged if they're not exceptional at sports. The best part about sports especially at this age is trying different activities and having fun.

What does sports mean to you personally, and in your view, what significant life lessons can children (and adults) learn from participating in sports?

There are too many life lessons to name! I wouldn't be where I am today without sports. Growing up I met so many of my dear friends, learned to work with others as a team, learned how to deal with success and failure and also what it meant to be a leader. Then there are the physical benefits that come from playing sports no matter our age. I recently started playing ice hockey at the age of 41. The joy I have playing with other women and working together is so good for my soul and health.

Given your immersion in the world of sports as an anchor at Sportsnet, what motivated you to focus on basketball for your story?

It's funny because I didn't even play basketball as a kid. It was the title of the book, Ali Hoops that came to me first and then I built the story around that. Probably not the way most authors create their books!

Your story emphasizes the crucial theme of teamwork in sports. What message do you hope young readers take away from your book?

I hope they are reminded that it's ok to try something new and not 'get it' immediately. It's ok to continue a sport or hobby even if you're not the best. The best teams are made up of people supporting each other. It takes everyone's magic to make a great team, no matter how small or big your role is.

For educators interested in organizing online or in-person author visits, where can they find you?

My website: evankaosmak.com or IG/X @evankaosmak

The book is also available online, in select stores and through publisher plumleafpress.com

What’s next for Evanka Osmak? Is there another book in the works?

I am currently working on a follow-up to Ali Hoops. I want to make Ali as relatable as possible. Sometimes you don't always make the team, sometimes friendships change as our interests grow and sometimes new people and opportunities pop up.

…..

Evanka Osmak's Ali Hoops is a wonderful addition to any library collection, providing inspiration and valuable lessons on teamwork and inclusion. Whether it's for International Women's Day, the excitement of the Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games, or the start of a new school year, this book offers timely and important messages for young readers. Read along with us at Hooked on Books as we celebrate Evanka Osmak's debut and her commitment to empowering the next generation through her writing.
