What to Know About Secondary Schools in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB)

With a population of over 3 million residents, it’s no surprise that the City of Toronto is home to a large and diverse public school system. The TDSB is Canada’s largest and one of the most diverse school boards, serving over 75,000 high school students across 110 secondary schools across Toronto. This can understandably feel overwhelming for parents, caregivers and students. Not to worry, the Teachers on Call in-person and online tutoring service is here to help. We know a lot about schools from tutoring students for over 40 years and having a team of tutors who are Ontario Certified Teachers. What is the Difference Between Curriculum Night and an Open House / Information Night?

It’s important not to confuse High School Open Houses and Information Nights with Curriculum Night. Open Houses and Information Nights are intended for prospective students and families exploring their high school options for the following year. They provide an overview of the school community, programs, student life, extracurriculars, and facilities. In contrast, Curriculum Night is designed for families to attend annually who are already enrolled at the school. Curriculum Night, sometimes called Back-to-School Night, is an annual fall event held in elementary and secondary schools across public, Catholic, and independent schools. This evening focuses on meeting your child’s current teachers and learning more about classroom expectations, assessment, and daily routines for the current school year. If you are specifically looking for Curriculum Night details, we have a separate blog that outlines what to expect and how to make the most of the event, click here.

What to Expect at TDSB Open Houses and Information Nights

Open Houses and Information Nights give prospective students and families a chance to see what makes each high school unique. Today’s secondary schools are more specialized than ever before – in many ways, they are starting to feel more like universities and colleges, offering pathways based not only on where you live, but on your interests and strengths. Whether you’re exploring English, STEM programs focused on math and science, arts-focused schools, French Immersion, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate options, these sessions help you make an informed decision. While these Open Houses are typically geared toward Grade 8 students, families are always welcome to attend earlier to get a feel for the school community.

It’s also an opportunity to take a tour of the school, visit classrooms, and learn more about student life. In many cases, there may even be official presentations, student and parent panels, or performances — such as concerts from the high school band — to showcase the school’s culture and spirit. Specialized High School Programs – What TDSB Offers

The TDSB offers a variety of Specialized Programs focused on the Arts, Math, Science & Technology, Leadership and more! Specialized Programs (formerly Central Student Interest Programs) are available at both the elementary and  secondary level and are located within several schools across the system.

Secondary Schools with Specialized Programs in the TDSB are in the categories of Arts, Exceptional Athletes, Integrated Technology, International Baccalaureate (IB), Leadership Pathway, and Math/Science and Technology (MST).  Each school offers a variation to their program which is why it is important to do your research.

While these sessions are heavily attended by grade 8 students and their families given grade 9 is the major intake year, they are in fact open to the community. If your child is interested in a specialized program with an application process, you may want to consider starting even earlier such as in grade 7 to give enough time to make an informed decision.

Here is a deep dive into some of the most popular Specialize Programs in the TDSB from the nearly 40 options available:

        Africentric Program – Code: A

How the TDSB Specialized Program Application Process Is Changing for 2025

For 2025, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is shifting the admissions process for its Specialized Programs from a lottery-based selection to a merit-based system. Applicants will now need to meet a report-card benchmark (based on their 2024-25 academic performance) and, depending on the program, present a portfolio or audition video to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Selection will be based on an applicant score that combines these elements rather than chance or random draw, which the board says will improve fairness and transparency. Currently, acceptance offers for Specialized Programs are planned for February 11, 2026. Acceptances and waitlist status will be sent via email to all applicants. Offers expire February 17, 2026 at 4 p.m. If students do not accept placement by the deadline, the placement will be automatically declined.Further offers will be made where spaces are available on February 18 and 25, 2026. Read more here.

Application Process for TDSB High School Specialized Programs in 2025

Unlike attending your local feeder school based on where you live, students interested in attending schools with Centralized Programs need to apply. Based on direction from the Supervisor appointed at the TDSB by the Minister of Education, the decision has been made to change the application and admission process for Specialized Programs. Now, elementary specialty programs will admit students based on a portfolio or audition video and high school applicants will receive an overall score based on their grades as well as a portfolio, audition or entrance test.

The application window has been adjusted and will now be open from Monday, November 24, 2025 to Friday, December 12, 2025 at noon. This is instead of initial communications which was November 10, 2025 until December 1, 2025. For any further changes, check the official TDSB website.

        Elementary
Applicants will be admitted based on an evaluated portfolio or audition video submitted with their application.

        Secondary
Applicants must meet a report card benchmark (based on their 2024-25 report cards) to be eligible to apply. Applicants will be seated based on their overall applicant score; a combination of select report card marks connected to their program of choice and an evaluated demonstration of knowledge and skills.

Please visit www.tdsb.on.ca/specializedprograms to learn more about program entry points, eligibility requirements, minimum report card benchmark, the required demonstrations of knowledge and skill, and the application and admission process.

All TDSB schools with Specialized Programs also host open houses in November, and we encourage you to take this opportunity to visit, learn more and ask questions about specific schools and programs.

If you have any questions about applying to a Specialized Program, please contact the Central Program Admissions Office at CentralPrograms@tdsb.on.ca.
