Netflix Shows and Movies to Watch in French to Improve your Child's Comprehension

Netflix has many shows in French for Core, Extended and French Immersion students to improve their listening comprehension.

One place where Core, Extended and French Immersion students can easily improve some skills at home is by working on listening comprehension in French: a super important part of helping students become truly fluent in a second language. Our first French listening comprehension post on Netflix shows was so popular, we decided to vet more shows in French for watchers of all grade levels!

All of these shows have both French and English subtitles and dubbing. Here’s a handful of shows to get started, with something for everyone:

For littler watchers…

Ponysitters Club

In this drama series geared for younger kids (age 7+), a young horse enthusiast teams up with her best friends to rescue and rehabilitate animals on her family's beloved ranch. The Ponysitters Club is a Canadian children's television series and has 2 seasons available on Netflix.

Dragons Rescue Riders

The twins, Dak and Leyla, spend their days rescuing dragons and helping people in their adopted town, Huttsgalor. The dialogue is slow and easy to follow for beginning listeners, even if they’re unable to recognize all the words.

Puffin Rock

Puffin Rock is a gentle preschool series, appropriate for kids three and older. The French will likely be a bit too tricky for first year French Immersion students, but for slightly older children, they will be able to pick up some science and words about different animal species and their behaviour.

For big kids and older watchers…

All Hail King Julien

All Hail King Julien may look at first glance like it would be better suited to a younger watcher, but the speed at which the characters converse in French will challenge the comprehension of a much older student listening (and this can be great, for kids learning to follow conversational speeds!) The show stars King Julien, Maurice, and Mort from the DreamWorks Animation animated film Madagascar franchise.

Space Jam (1996)

Currently available on Netflix, this live action and animation blend is a classic watch. In French, most of the dialogue is easy to follow, with vocabulary suitable for older kids, and a few conversational banter spots where the speed really picks up.

We Can Be Heroes

In this Netflix movie, when alien invaders capture Earth's superheroes, their kids must learn to work together to save their parents — and the planet. This one’s great for the whole family, especially if your family loved Spy Kids. It’s okay to add English subtitles so the whole group can watch!

Free Rein

This movie features a 15-year-old from Los Angeles who is spending the summer at her mother's childhood home off the coast of England. While there, she bonds with a mysterious horse. The French dialogue is easy enough to follow for students possibly as low as grade 5, making it a great pick for tweens in French Immersion.
