A Special Book For A Child: Meet Me in Zzzz

The bedtime story is more than a part of a child’s bedtime routine. When they listen to a book, children learn concepts of print. They see how print is actually spoken word, pick up on the ways language can be played with to express thoughts and feelings, and develop a rich vocabulary.

Recently, our Director, Joanne Sallay, had the chance to review a book, for Village Living Magazine called Meet Me in Zzzz. She described it as, ‘magnetic’ because it actually is! The picture book is custom made by the purchaser. They create customized magnets that include one photo of the child plus another eight photos of choice. The nine magnets create the characters for Meet Me in Zzzz, all of whom are central figures in the life of the little reader.

By making the story personal, this will be a tale the child will want to read over and over again. It will also make a wonderful keepsake, especially when it comes from a family member who doesn’t live close to the reader-what an amazing way to build a connection!

MagneTree Books is giving away a copy of Meet Me in Zzzz to one of our readers! Enter to win via the Rafflecopter.

4 Fall Trends For A Great School Year

With the first long weekend of the year approaching, students are now nicely settled back into their classrooms and daily routines. But planning for a successful school year is still on the minds of students and parents and the long weekend is the perfect time to get organized!

We’ve rounded up the latest educational trends to hit the classroom this fall. They cover a range of categories including neat school supplies, cool extracurriculars, and healthy meals.

These four trends will help students have a fun and organized school year.

Code in the classroom – STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a big focus in the education world. Don’t be surprised if you hear that your child is playing Minecraft at school! Coding in particular is a big trend with many children learning programming logic at very young ages. There are a growing number of places offering extracurricular coding for kids classes.

Get ready to colour – Adult colouring books are a growing trend that is now extending to children.  Many colouring enthusiasts claim colouring helps them relax and unwind. Check out these free  printable binder covers to colour from Staples. We love this idea as it promotes student organization and creativity at the same time.

Express through emojis – This year, emojis are coming off of the electronics and to life via school supplies on magnets, pencils, and even personalized labels like the ones available at Mabel’s Labels. Students can use these supplies to give their family, friends and teachers a heads up as to how they are feeling. Advice to parents: remember to check the emoji magnet status on the fridge!

Go bananas for Bento – Litterless lunches are here to stay. Parents and students are getting behind this movement that promotes less mess and healthy eating. Miniature bento boxes like Monbento are adorable and light weight, making them easy to carry for little ones. And if you are looking for wholesome school-safe snacks, try Made Good for peanut-free bars and mini granola treats that are made with vegetables..

Want to know what else is cool for fall? Read our educational director, Joanne Sallay’s Huffington Post article for more fall trends.

We want to help you and your child choose a favourite fall trend with a $25 Staples gift card. Enter by completing the Rafflecopter entry below. Contest open to residents of the GTA.
