Transitioning to the Summer Break
June 15, 2009 by Rhona Sallay

With the school year drawing to a close, the summer holidays provide an opportunity for you and your family to enjoy a change of pace from the school year and focus on different interests and activities.

While the holidays can be an enjoyable and relaxing time, the change to a different schedule may pose challenges to your family’s routine.

We have included some tips that may be helpful for you or any friends as the summer approaches!

Ease the Routine Transition
  • Prepare for the summer break while your child is still in school
  • Discuss your child’s activities in advance.  If your child is attending a day camp, visit the location ahead of time and meet with counsellors
  • Plan for family activities
 Engage Your Children
  • Involve your child when preparing for family trips and activities
  • Discuss what s/he would like to contribute to a family calendar of events
 Encourage Summertime Learning
  • Summer is a great opportunity for you to inspire learning and for your child to get ahead and build stronger learning skills
  • Take advantage of the extra time to visit places you would not normally attend during the year.  Field trips to museums, exhibits, science centres and festivals are several ways to keep up learning
  • Encourage reading.  Strong reading skills are the foundation of good education
