Course Selection

February 10, 2009 by Rhona Sallay

It is important for parents to be involved in the course selection process to help their children choose the pathway and courses and that are appropriate for their interests, strengths and abilities. The courses that children select may impact their opportunities in higher grades and their career path after they leave high school.

We have included some suggestions that may be helpful for you working with children in selecting their courses.

Engage Your Child

Parents are their children’s first counselors. Prior to deciding on specific courses or selecting a pathway, we recommend that you as a parent should:
  • Understand your child’s interests and discuss her/his career aspirations
  • Understand your child’s perception of her/his areas of strengths and weaknesses
  • Consult with teachers if needed to develop a better awareness of your child’s strengths and abilities
  • Arrive to an understanding with your child on her/his academic strengths and areas for development
Investigate Options

In conjunction with your child:
  • Understand the Ontario Secondary School requirements
  • Review the school's course calendar to determine what courses are offered
  • Learn which courses have prerequisites that must be previously earned
  • Review the course curriculum
  • Discuss with other parents and/or students who have taken the same courses previously and are following similar career paths
 Utilize Education Professionals
  • Make an appointment with the school guidance counsellor for help in making choices that best suit your child’s interests and strengths
  • If applicable, inquire about special education specific course support
  • Attend high school open houses and ask questions about course options
  • Talk to current teachers about what your son or daughter can expect in their class
  • Visit University/College websites and fairs to learn about prerequisite high school courses needed for specific programs
Plan for the Future
  • Review the outcomes of the meetings and discussions with your child
  • Determine with her/him whether to pursue the Academic or Applied course option and the prerequisite courses that are needed to meet her/his aspirations
  • Create a plan and timelines to achieve agreed objectives
In summary, working with your child in selecting courses and pursuing the right career path can have a significant positive impact on her/his future career success.
